History
The history of the Macedonian denar is one of national identity forged amid the dissolution of Yugoslavia and the difficult journey toward stability. North Macedonia declared independence in September 1991 and introduced the denar in 1992, replacing the Yugoslav dinar. The name revives the ancient denomination: the word "denar" is the Macedonian form of denarius, the Roman silver coin, which also gives its name to Serbia's dinar and many other regional currencies.
The early 1990s were turbulent for the new state. Greece imposed an economic blockade from 1994 to 1995 over the country's name and flag, severely straining the economy. Despite these pressures, North Macedonia maintained its exchange rate peg, fixing the denar first to the German mark and then to the euro.
The denar has been pegged to the euro (previously the Deutsche mark) since 1997, a policy maintained continuously by the National Bank of the Republic of North Macedonia. This fixed exchange rate of approximately 61.5 MKD per EUR has provided monetary stability and low inflation, mirroring aspects of a currency board arrangement. North Macedonia is an EU candidate country; euro adoption remains a long-term objective.
